Portugal: retail closes, manufacturing is functioning as usual
The country is living in another State of Emergency, at least until the 30th of January. Industry, distribution and schools remain open and functioning as usual. Non-essential retail is once again closed
Nordstrom holiday sales fall by 22%
The American chain of luxury department stores announced a net sales decline of approximately 22% for the nine-week holiday period ended on the 2nd of January 2021, compared with the nine weeks ended on the 4th of January 2020

The New York-based group G-III Apparel is said to have entered the race to acquire Arcadia and to be among the top four candidates (Next, Boohoo and American-based Authentic Brands). However, G-III has not yet publicly confirmed
UK: online sales growth hits 13-year high
Following an outstanding performance in November, online retail sales growth in December remained high at 37% Year-on-Year (YoY) growth. Online retail sales growth for the full year stands at 36% YoY, resulting in the highest annual growth since 2007
Genesco: comparable sales decreased by 3%
The company reported that comparable sales, including both stores and direct sales, decreased by 3% for the quarter-to-date period ended on the 26th of December 2020. Same store sales decreased by 14% and sales for the company's e-commerce businesses increased by 49%
JD Sports buys menswear retailer Wellgosh
The British sports-fashion retailer JD Sports acquired the Leicester-based menswear retailer Wellgosh. The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed yet
England with new general confinement
The country is going into lockdown to try to avoid further pressure to an NHS already challenging its limits. This is the third confinement since the outbreak of COVID-19 back in March 2020. Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales are also implementing similar measures

Arcadia’s Evans brand acquired by Australia’s City Chic for 23 million British pounds
The agreement includes the acquisition of the Evans brand, the eCommerce and wholesale businesses for 23.1 million British pounds in cash by City Chic. This deal, excludes the brick and mortar stores and follows Arcadia entering into administration a few weeks ago
