Verney Shoes: reconciling fashion, sustainability, animal protection and ethics
The Portuguese footwear brand produces locally using materials from other industries, such as apple, hemp, recycled plastic bottles, recycled clothing, to promote a circular economy
The brand goes further, promoting a repair, reuse and recycle programme. First, advises customers to look for a local shoemaker for repairing services because they are “often capable of true miracles”. If it does not work, Verney repairs the shoes in need of repair upon an agreed budget. Finally, when the shoes “have finally given everything”, the brand invites its customers to send them back to recycle them and use them in other components, thus completing the circle.
Another distinctive feature of the brand regards the concern with the production sites and working conditions provided: “Our models are produced in Portugal, in factories that employ qualified labour recognized worldwide for their quality in the sector and that comply with all laws defending human rights”, it can be read on the brand’s website.
Finally, Verney shoes’ also stand out for not including any materials or components whose composition incorporates any material of animal origin (not even glues). The brand is, then, considered vegan, and has achieved PETA certification.
