UK retail footfall falls in June amid heatwave

UK retail footfall fell in June as record high temperatures discouraged shoppers from visiting stores, according to the British Retail Consortium (BRC). High streets recorded the steepest decline
According to the latest BRC-Sensormatic data, total footfall in the UK declined by 3.4% year- on-year in June, compared to a 2.6% decline in May. Footfall on the high street fell by 6.2%, while footfall in shopping centres fell by 2.5%. Retail parks were the most resilient, with footfall falling by just 0.3%.
Of the UK regions, Scotland was the only one to record growth, with footfall rising by 1.7%. Meanwhile, England saw the largest decline at 3.0%, with footfall falling by 2.3% in Wales and 0.9% in Northern Ireland.
“Footfall dropped in June as the record heatwave kept many shoppers indoors”, said Helen Dickinson, Chief Executive of the British Retail Consortium. She noted that the sharpest declines were experienced where temperatures were highest, including London and the Southeast.
However, even though the weather affected footfall, she added that retailers continue to face broader challenges in the form of rising costs, higher taxes and regulatory pressures.
