In the edition of the World Footwear Business Conditions survey, the cost of merchandise or raw materials continues to be the most frequently mentioned problem by respondents, accounting for 59% of responses. However, this percentage has decreased from the previous edition of the survey, where it surpassed 81%. This concern is shared by every line of business, but it appears to be more important to footwear manufacturers than to traders. The percentage of experts mentioning this problem varies between 43% in Africa and 75% in South America.

Another top challenge faced by the footwear business is the persistence of insufficient demand in the home market, which accounts for 34% of responses. The concern with insufficient demand in home markets is more prevalent in Europe (45%) and North America (42%).

Financial difficulties (28%) are now a greater concern than human resource problems (24%). Problems related to competition in domestic and foreign markets have become more relevant in the current edition (23% vs. 8% and 14% vs. 12%, respectively), as well as difficulties associated with taxes, regulatory requirements, lack of adequate equipment, or legal obstacles to trade.

About Survey

About the Survey
In 2019 the World Footwear has created the World Footwear' expert panel and is now conducting a Business Conditions Survey every semester.

The objective of the World Footwear Experts Panel Survey is to collect information regarding the current business conditions within the worldwide footwear markets and then to redistribute such information in a way it will provide an accurate overview of the situation of the global footwear industry.

The eighth edition of this online survey was conducted during the month of April 2023.

We have obtained 130 valid answers, 42% coming from Asia, 38% from Europe, 9% from North America and 6% from South America, and the remainder 5% from Africa. About 22% of the respondents are involved in footwear manufacturing (manufacturers), 13% in footwear trade and distribution (traders), and 65% in other footwear-related activities such as trade associations, consultancy, journalism, etc. (others).
