Asia accounts for 56% of global footwear consumption

JUST RELEASED: The geography of footwear consumption is evolving, with Asia consolidating its dominance. Check all details in the new World Footwear Yearbook 2026 recently released by APICCAPS, the Portuguese Footwear Association
Global footwear demand in 2025 remained firmly concentrated in Asia, which accounted for 56% of all pairs consumed worldwide. The region further strengthened its position in the global market, confirming that the industry's centre of gravity is increasingly shaped not only by Asian manufacturing capacity but also by the purchasing behaviour of Asian consumers. However, this dominance continues to be driven largely by demographic scale rather than high consumption intensity. Average footwear consumption in Asia stood at 2.6 pairs per capita, significantly below the levels recorded in more mature markets.
North America maintained the highest per capita consumption rate globally, at 4.6 pairs per person, while Europe followed with 4.1 pairs. Despite its lower per capita figure, Europe once again exceeded North America in total consumption volume, reflecting the size of its consumer base. Meanwhile, Africa continued to expand its share of global footwear demand, reaching 10.7% of worldwide consumption. Nevertheless, average consumption remained limited to 1.6 pairs per capita, highlighting the persistent impact of lower purchasing power and affordability constraints on market development across the continent.
