AAFA claims lack of trade credit insurance could hinder economy restart
A new report by economists Dr. Robert Litan and Dr. Yong Xu highlights the need for a government-sponsored backstop to support trade credit insurance (TCI) to ensure a safe recovery from the economic fallout caused by the COVID-19 crisis
"For weeks we have been ringing the alarm bells about the looming credit crisis that slows down our economic recovery, and this report echoes this conclusion. Credit insurance is essential for apparel and footwear businesses to support manufacturing and limit overall risk, which is especially important now given the liquidity squeeze and cash flow uncertainty we are seeing. Without TCI, businesses will need to take on smaller orders or even pass on business opportunities, stalling our safe economic recovery", commented Steve Lamar, President and CEO of the American Apparel & Footwear Association.

Among the report’s findings:
- 60% of suppliers using TCI are small to medium sized companies with less than 20 million US dollars in annual sales;
- TCI supports firms employing more than two million American workers, conservatively protecting 600 billion US dollars in annual US sales;
- The TCI industry has reduced coverage by nearly 14% since year-end 2019, with additional cuts expected;
- This cutback in TCI coverage will inhibit supplier production by roughly 46 billion US dollars and the hiring of approximately 155 000 American workers.

"The Federal government must take action today to make sure credit markets are fully functioning throughout the crucially important holiday season. Credit means we can take orders and ship goods, which allows us to keep our store shelves stocked and our workers employed. Without credit, the jobs engine that supports one in four American workers seizes up just as we enter what should be the busiest time of the year", Mr. Lamar concluded.
