Shoe Station Group cuts full-year outlook amid promotional pressure
The US-based footwear retailer has lowered its 2026 outlook as increased promotional activity and inventory liquidation impacted sales and profitability during the second quarter
In the three months that ended on the 1st of August, Shoe Carnival reported total net sales of 284.3 million US dollars, down from 306.4 million US dollars in the same period the previous year. Compared to the same period last year, comparable store sales declined by 7.1%.

The Shoe Carnival banner generated net sales of 178.5 million US dollars during the period, which reflects a decrease of 6.5% year-on-year, accounting for 63% of total net sales. Comparable store net sales declined by 6.3%. Meanwhile, Shoe Station generated net sales of 105.7 million US dollars, representing 37% of the total and an 8.4% year-on-year decline. Comparable store net sales decreased by 8.5%.

We priced competitively to protect our market position and accelerated the liquidation of aged and excess inventory, both of which pressured our gross profit margin. Sales were further impacted by merchandise assortments that were not fully aligned with the customers shopping our stores”, Clifford summarised.

Profitability weakened during the second quarter. Shoe Station Group's gross profit margin fell by 690 basis points year-on-year to 31.9%, mainly due to a 630 basis-point decline in the merchandise margin. This was partly due to increased promotional activity and product liquidation, and partly due to the absence of a benefit from price increases implemented ahead of higher tariff-related costs in the previous year.

The company’s SG&A expenses decreased by 10.6 million US dollars, accounting for 29.2% of net sales, compared to 30.6% a year earlier, driven by lower selling costs and performance-based compensation. However, net income fell to 6.3 million US dollars, or 0.23 US dollars per diluted share, down from 19.2 million US dollars, or 0.70 US dollars per diluted share, in the second quarter of 2025.

Back-to-School Performance Update

In the four weeks of ending on the 29th of August 2026, the company’s net sales declined by 3.3%, while comparable store sales fell by 2.7%, compared to the same period in the prior year. According to Shoe Station, this represents “a significant improvement” on the 7.1% decline in comparable store sales recorded in the second quarter.

Full-Year Outlook

Shoe Station Group lowered its full-year outlook for 2026, reducing its net sales guidance from 1.13 to 1.15 billion US dollars to 1.10 to 1.11 billion US dollars. Even more significantly, adjusted earnings per share guidance was reduced to 0.75 to 0.90 from 1.40 to 1.60 US dollars.

The revised outlook reflects ongoing promotional activity in the footwear market. Sifford said the company expects localized fall assortments and increased advertising investment to support sales, although promotional pressures are expected to persist through the remainder of the year. He also highlighted the company’s debt-free balance sheet and 131.6 million US dollars in cash and marketable securities.
