Retail trade in Latvia down 0.6% in May

Retail trade in Latvia down 0.6% in May
Compared to May 2019, total retail trade turnover reduced by 0.6 % in May 2020. Turnover of retail trade in food products grew by 1.6 %. Retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods with one of the most significant turnover drops
Compared to May 2019 (calendar adjusted data at constant prices) compiled by the country’s Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that, in May 2020 total retail trade turnover reduced by 0.6%. Turnover of retail trade in food products grew by 1.6%. Retail trade in non-food products (excluding automotive fuel) decreased by 3.9%, with turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel increasing by 3.3%.

As compared to May 2019, the most notable turnover growth was registered in retail sale of electrical household appliances in specialised stores (of 25.0%), retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet (16.5%) and retail sale in non-specialised stores selling mainly non-food products (7.3 %). Most significant turnover drop was registered in retail sale in stalls or markets (of 34.2%), retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods (27.8%) and retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (6.3%).

Compared to the previous month, in May 2020 total turnover of retail trade enterprises rose by 7.8%, according to seasonally adjusted data at constant prices. Turnover of retail trade in food products grew by 2.8%. Retail trade in non-food products (excluding automotive fuel) increased by 13.4%. Significant turnover increase was registered in retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods (of 73.9%), retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (31.8%) and retail sale in non-specialised stores selling mainly non-food products (31.1%). The most notable turnover drop was registered in retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet (of 7.1%) and retail sale of electrical household appliances in specialised stores (4.7%).
