US footwear sales rise slightly in the first half
The US footwear market recorded a slight year-on-year increase in sales of 1% in the first half, according to Circana, as consumers remained selective in their discretionary spending
According to market research company Circana, footwear sales in the US increased in value by 1% in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period last year. Higher average selling prices helped offset the decline in the number of pairs sold, with consumers remaining selective in their discretionary spending.

Performance footwear saw the strongest growth
, with sales up by 6% in value and the number of units sold rising. Running shoes led the category, with a 13% increase in both value and volume, but other activity-based categories (including cross-training, golf and volleyball footwear) also posted gains.

In contrast, sport lifestyle footwear declined, despite growth in running-inspired styles. Sneakers continued to account for most footwear sales in the US market.

Meanwhile, fashion footwear sales remained flat in value in the first half of the year, although some categories showed positive momentum. Ballerinas recorded double-digit growth, while sales of mules, clogs and pumps also increased. Fashion sandals remained stable overall, with growth in slides and flip-flops offsetting weaker sales of larger, multi-strap styles.

In the outdoor segment, gains were also recorded in hiking and light hiking footwear, as well as fishing and water boots.

Consumers remain highly intentional about their footwear purchases. The biggest growth stories in the first half came from categories that blend comfort, versatility, and performance. Fashion trends are generating excitement and momentum, but sneakers remain the largest part of the business by a wide margin”, summed up Beth Goldstein, footwear and accessories industry advisor at Circana.

Looking ahead, Circana expects the US footwear industry to end 2026 relatively flat, with price increases continuing to offset lower demand for products.  The market research company noted that nearly half of consumers have reported delaying purchases or choosing lower-priced alternatives due to price increases.
