Minimum wage in Cambodia increases 180% in six years
Trade union representatives, government officials and footwear and garment workers in Cambodia have agreed on an increase in the minimum monthly wage for next year. In just six years labor costs have increased significantly in the country
Effective from the beginning of 2018 manufacturers in Cambodia will have to pay the equivalent of 170 US dollars per month as minimum wage, an 11% increase from the 153 US dollars currently paid.
In 2012, the minimum monthly wage was 61 US dollars, which means the increase in the minimum wage in the last six years was something like 180%. Some continue to underline how much this has contributed to the loss of competitiveness of the country’s main industries, as it impacts specially industries highly intensive in manpower, such as garment and footwear.
The garment industry employs an estimated 700 000 workers in Cambodia, and according to the local authorities generates around 7 billion US dollars per year for the country’s economy.
