Kyaia expands portfolio with the acquisition of AsPortuguesas
The Portuguese group has acquired the eco-friendly footwear brand AsPortuguesas, also from Portugal, for an undisclosed sum. Kyaia already owns the Fly London and Softinos brands
Amorim Cork Ventures, the incubator of Corticeira Amorim, and its founding partner Pedro Abrantes have announced the sale of their stake in Ecochic Portuguesas, the owner of the AsPortuguesas footwear brand, to the Kyaia Group. The Kyaia Group already owns the Fly London and Softinos brands.

In a statement that does not disclose the value of the deal, it is revealed that Kyaia now owns 100% of the company’s capital.

Founded in 2015, Ecochic Portuguesas was born out of Pedro Abrantes’ vision. With the support of Amorim Cork Ventures, he launched the AsPortuguesas brand, which has established itself in the market “as a symbol of contemporary Portuguese identity, with cork soles being its distinguishing feature”.

In 2017, the Kyaia Group joined the corporate structure, which, according to the statement, “represented a new impetus in the brand’s internationalisation process” and “contributed decisively to its expansion” – the brand reached “more than 60 international markets over the last decade”

“After 10 years of sustained growth and given the maturity of the project, Amorim Cork Ventures and Pedro Abrantes decided that the time was right to end their involvement, enabling the Kyaia Group to take the brand forward independently”, they said.

“It was a good deal, but above all, I am proud to see a project that started in my mother’s garage being recognised and valued”, Pedro Abrantes said, as quoted in the same statement.

Fortunato Frederico, the president and founder of Kyaia, emphasised that the company is “determined to accelerate the global presence of the brand” and “reinforce its position as a benchmark in eco-friendly footwear”, with cork soles serving as a distinguishing feature.

Founded in 1984, Kyaia is now one of the largest companies in Portugal's footwear industry, employing over 600 people. Its portfolio of brands includes Fly London, Softinos and Asportuguesas. The group also owns the Foreva footwear retail chain and the Overcube online marketplace. Over time, the group has diversified into activities beyond footwear, including tourism, information technology, distribution and real estate.
