French authorities fine Shein over consumer protection breaches

France has fined the China-based online retailer approximately 22 million euros over issues with returns, product information, and order confirmations. Shein will challenge the penalty
The Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs, and Fraud Control said last week it had fined Shein 16.7 million euros for the order confirmation issues and 5.8 million euros for issues with returns and environmental quality information.
Shein considered this decision disproportionate and intends to appeal. “Technical issues, with no impact on consumers and already addressed where necessary, have been used as the basis for an exceptional penalty”, said a Shein spokesperson. “We therefore intend to strongly contest both sanctions in their entirety”.
The online fast-fashion retailer has been facing growing scrutiny in France. It was fined 40 million euros in July over misleading discounts, while a bid to suspend its marketplace was rejected by Paris’ Court of Appeals in March. Regulatory pressure intensified after authorities in November banned the sale of child-like sex dolls and weapons on its platform.
