Digital Personalization in Footwear: Valuing Craftsmanship in a Customer-Centric Era

NEW PAPER JUST RELEASED! The shift from mass production to mass personalisation is redefining the bond between footwear brands and consumers, blending traditional craft with digital technology. A new World Footwear innovation paper focusing on this transformation is now available for FREE download
Historically, the shift from craft manufacturing to the Second Industrial Revolution introduced mass production, reducing the consumer’s role to purchasing standardized items. The 1980s saw the emergence of mass customization, allowing customers to choose from a predefined set of options. Today, the industry is advancing toward mass personalization - a paradigm where consumers actively co-create tailor-made products using individual user data and custom design inputs.
While customization offers choices within set parameters, true personalization delivers tailor-made solutions designed around specific consumer preferences.
This document addresses two types of personalization: aesthetic personalization and functional personalization. Aesthetic personalization is intended to differentiate a product from a visual or decorative perspective, for example by adding the customer's name or printing a customer-selected image. Functional personalization, on the other hand, applies to products designed to fulfil specific functional requirements for individual customers, such as medical or orthopaedic components and footwear.
