Online footwear consumption gains share in Spain
The COVID-19 pandemic appears to have given a sustainable boost to e-commerce in the footwear sector, as 2021 was the second-best year in this regard, immediately after 2020
According to the latest of the National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC), the e-commerce turnover of footwear and leather goods generated 565.7 million euros, down by 1.4%, as compared to 2020, but up by 43.5%, as compared to 2019, before the outbreak of the pandemic. Similarly, e-commerce in this sector caused 6.7 million transactions, which reflects a decline of 8.2% and an increase of 36.7%, on a comparable basis to 2020 and 2019, respectively.

In addition, the data shows that in 2021 the average value of each purchase of footwear and leather goods on the internet was higher than 84.4 euros.

Solely in the last quarter of 2021, the e-commerce turnover of footwear and leather goods was 172.5 million euros, reflecting a decrease of 13.9%, as compared to the same period of 2020, but a rise of 45.9%, as compared to the last quarter of 2019. The number of transactions associated, which was 1.9 million, dropped by 17.1%, as compared to the last quarter of 2020, but grew by 38.8%, on a comparable basis to the same period of 2019.
