World Leather Day 2025 aims to invite a closer look at leather
Taking place on the 26th of April 2025, this year’s celebrations will focus on the theme 'Beyond The Surface', designed to encourage a deeper look at leather and challenge misconceptions
Organised by the not-for-profit membership association Leather Naturally, this year’s celebration aims to promote a deeper look at leather as a material, challenging preconceptions and superficial judgments. To this end, the ‘Beyond the Surface’ campaign will focus on transparency, sustainability and longevity.

Leather Naturally would like to emphasise that transparent and compliant leather production requires audited tanneries with regulated chemicals, strict hygiene, enabling brands and NGO requirements to be met through compliance with Restricted Substances Lists (RSLs).

Modern leather production also adheres to strict environmental standards for water, energy, waste and chemicals, and some tanneries even use Life Cycle Assessments (LCA), which are often used to measure and reduce the overall environmental impact of leather.

On top of this, leather’s “exceptional durability allows it to be repaired, reused, and repurposed, making it a long-lasting material”, points out the organisation.

Launched for the first time in 2022, World Leather Day is a global movement dedicated to celebrating leather as a material and promoting a deeper understanding of the leather industry. It is recognised by leather manufacturers, traders, chemical companies, brands and retailers, leather workers and craftsmen worldwide.

For example, the Footwear Exchange - a sector-focused knowledge platform working to advance the leather, footwear and related sectors in Bangladesh - is promoting a roundtable discussion on the 26th to bring together key stakeholders to reflect on the realities, challenges and future opportunities for the leather sector in Bangladesh, with a focus on sustainability, traceability and improving global perceptions.
