Shoe Zone’s full-year revenue falls amid challenging trading conditions

In its latest full-year 2026 trading update, the UK-based footwear retailer reported a 4.5% decline in revenue, as weaker consumer confidence and a reduced store portfolio impacted sales
Shoe Zone reported an unaudited revenue totalling 142.4 million British pounds (170.1 million euros) for the 2026 financial year (which ended on the 3rd of October), down by 4.5% from the previous year. This was due to trading out of 18 fewer stores, as well as a continued decline in consumer confidence and general negativity surrounding the UK economy.
“This was a challenging year, particularly in the first half, as consumer confidence continued to be weak, and fell further following the Government’s November 2025 budget, with persistent inflation, higher interest rates remaining elevated and reduced levels of disposable income all contributing to a generally negative economic and consumer sentiment in the UK”, commented Charles Smith, Chairman of the company.
During the year, product margin increased to 63.1%, up from 61.0% in the full-year 2025. This was driven by lower container prices and a more favourable sterling-to-dollar exchange rate. However, rising container costs due to disruption at Chinese ports, coupled with geopolitical tensions pushing up fuel prices, are expected to put pressure on margins.
The company expects a full-year unaudited statutory loss before tax of 0.6 million British pounds (0.7 million euros), compared with a profit of 3.3 million British pounds (3.9 million euros) in the previous financial year. Excluding a 0.4 million British pounds (0.5 million euros) foreign exchange revaluation gain, the adjusted loss is forecast at 1.0 million British pounds (1.2 million euros) versus a profit of 2.4 million British pounds (2.9 million euros) a year earlier.
According to the statement, the swing to an adjusted loss reflects lower sales and higher employment costs, resulting from increases in National Insurance and the National Living Wage. This has been partly offset by improved product margins.
The company’s net cash position rose to approximately 15.1 million British pounds (18.0 million euros), up from 5.9 million British pounds (7.0 million euros) in the 2025 financial year, mainly driven by lower capital expenditure, reduced product costs and an overall decrease in cost of sales.
Stores
Shoe Zone ended the year with 251 retail stores, down by 6.7% from 269 in the last financial year, following 25 closures and seven openings, while six stores were refitted. The portfolio comprises 211 larger-format stores and 40 original High Street locations. The company aims to continue to expand its newer store format while limiting capital expenditure to essential investments.
Final full-year results will be published in January 2027.
