Declining leather footwear exports in India
According to the Council for Leather Exports (CLE) leather footwear exports reached 2 147.2 million US dollars in the last fiscal year (April 15 -March 16), declining by 5.75% from the previous year
Using data from the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCI&S) the CLE estimates that sales abroad of leather and leather products for the period April 2015 – March 2016 reached 5 853.96 million US dollars, compared to 6 494.84 million US dollars in similar period of the previous year. This represents a decline of 9.86%.

Leather footwear exports totaled 2 147.2 million US dollars in the fiscal year, declining by 5.75% from the previous year (2 278.18 million US dollars).

In the same period exports of finished leather declined by 21.26% and leather goods by 5.77%.

The main destinations for the exports of leather and leather products during the period were Germany with a 11.51% share (declining by 15.82% in the fiscal year), US with a 14.25% quota (growing by 8.59% compared to the previous year) and the UK with a share of 12.24% (declining by 4.62%).

According to the World Footwear Yearbook in 2015 India was the 7th largest exporter of footwear with a 1.4% share in total exports (representing 206 million pairs sold abroad). For more information about the footwear industry in 2015 please refer to the World Footwear Yearbook available here.
