Argentina: industry is under alert
According to local news agencies, the footwear industry in Argentina is struggling with sharp falls in production and consumption
A study developed by IES Consultores and now revealed announced that a drop in production levels of 11.4% in a year was registered. Apparent consumption of footwear is also on a declining trend and registered a decrease of 17.2% year-on-year during the first quarter of 2019.

The same source claims that, during the first four months of 2019 exports fell by 21%. On volume terms the decrease was lower: 13.2%. The value of footwear imports is also on a decreasing trend: 41.4% lower than in the first four months of 2018. In quantities, other countries acquired less Argentina-made footwear: imports fell by 37.6%.

According to the report by IES Consultores, Brazil is positioned as the main supplier of Argentina (31.9% share). It is followed by Vietnam with a share of 24.9% and China, which accounts for 20.4% of total imports.

In terms of exports, Chile is the main Argentine footwear market, representing 49% of the total, while Uruguay is in second place with 40.5%.

According to analysts, high inflation rates are impacting the internal consumption, resulting in a decline in consumption and serious difficulties for manufacturers and importers in the country.
