Amazon announces new job cuts in its retail division

The Seattle-based e-commerce giant has confirmed a new round of layoffs, mainly in its Store unit, following a broader reduction jobs that began last year and continued into January
According to several media reports, Amazon confirmed last week that it had made a small number of job cuts, mainly within its Stores unit, which oversees the main e-commerce website.
Employees reported receiving redundancy notices on an internal Slack channel with almost 37,000 members. In the channel, they asked questions about severance pay, internal job vacancies, and potential further cuts, according to messages viewed by Business Insider.
The messages suggest that the layoffs will affect several departments within retail, including customer service, marketplace support, and engineering. Employees in India and the UK will also be affected.
Amazon founder and executive chairman Jeff Bezos said that the company’s job cuts were partly driven by overhiring during the pandemic. In an interview with Fox News last Wednesday, he suggested that the company had significantly expanded its workforce to meet the surge in online orders that occurred while people were staying at home.
These cuts are the latest in a series of smaller reductions following a larger round of 30,000 job cuts which began last year and continued into January, amid ongoing organisational changes, including efforts to reduce bureaucracy and expand the use AI.
