Amazon reports 20% net sales growth in the second quarter
The Seattle-based online giant reported a 20% year-on-year increase in net sales in the second quarter, driven by strong growth in its AWS segment. Significant investment in AI infrastructure continues
In the second quarter of 2026, Amazon recorded net sales of 200.6 billion US dollars, a 20% increase compared to the same period in fiscal year 2025. Even excluding the favourable impact of year-on-year changes in foreign exchange rates, which amounted to 0.1 billion US dollars, net sales still increased by 20% compared with the second quarter of 2025.

Sales from the North American segment reached 116.2 billion US dollars during the quarter, reflecting a 16% year-on-year growth. Similarly, sales from the international segment grew by 15% year-on-year, reaching 42.2 billion US dollars.

Meanwhile, sales from the AWS segment increased by 37% year-on-year during the period, reaching 42.2 billion US dollars. “AWS is booming, growing 36.7% year-over-year in Q2 – our fastest growth in 18 quarters – and our AI and Chips businesses each eclipsed run rates of more than 25 billion US dollars”, emphasised Andy Jassy, President and CEO, Amazon.

In the second quarter of this year, the company’s operating income was 27.5 billion US dollars, compared to 19.2 million US dollars in the same quarter last year.

Ultimately, Amazon saw its net income in the second quarter rise to 62.6 billion US dollars, or 5.75 US dollars per diluted share, compared to 18.2 billion US dollars, or 1.68 US dollars per diluted share, in the same quarter of 2025. This included non-operating pre-tax other income of 53.4 billion US dollars, primarily from investments in Anthropic.

In the twelve months ending on the 30th of June, operating cash flow increased by 33% year-on-year to 161.4 billion US dollars. However, free cash flow declined from an inflow of 18.2 billion US dollars to an outflow of 7.6 billion US dollars, mainly due to an increase in AI-related capital expenditure of 66.1 billion US dollars, highlighting the company’s significant investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Third-Quarter Outlook

Amazon expects net sales in the third quarter to be between 197.0 and 202.0 billion US dollars, representing growth of between 9% and 12% compared with the same quarter in 2025. This guidance anticipates an unfavorable impact of approximately 80 basis points from foreign exchange rates.

Operating income
is expected to be between 22.5 and 26.5 billion US dollars, compared to 17.4 billion US dollars in the third quarter of 2025.

“There’s a lot to be excited about, and we have much more coming for customers in the second half of the year and beyond”, concluded Andy Jassy.
