Strong growth on Cambodia’s garment and footwear exports
According to figures release by the local Ministry of Commerce the total value of exports from the garment and footwear industry increased by 39.1% in the first quarter of 2016
The same source indicated that exports of the sector in the the period should have reached roughly 2 billion US dollars, which compares to 1.5 billion US dollars in similar period last year.

The European Union (EU) remained the largest market for the country’s garment and footwear exports, with total value of exports to the EU totaling 717.8 million US dollars.

The US (419.2 million US dollars), Canada (41.7 million US dollars) and Japan (34.6 million US dollars) followed in the list of main buyers.

Recently, official authorities have expressed some concerns regarding the rising labor costs in the country, as these might not follow an increase in productivity. On top of this, the garment's industry is frequently stage of strikes and protests in the country.  Improvements in these areas might be a strong push for the industry’s development, according to the Ministry of Commerce, who also hopes to see progresses on the trade agreements being negotiated, as they will offer development opportunities for Cambodia's industry.

In 2015, Cambodia’s footwear sector registered a record strong growth, with exports increasing by 21.8% to a total of 538 million US dollars. Cambodia’s garments sector also continued the upward trend, reaching exports of 5.7 billion US dollars, a 6.5% increase on 2014’s figures.
