UNIDO to support development of textile and footwear in Armenia
According to the Armenian News Agency UNIDO will set up a program providing 2 million US dollars for the development of the textile and footwear industries in the country
UNIDO is the specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for promoting industrial development with an aim to reduce poverty and to promote inclusive globalization and environmental sustainability. The UN Industrial Development Agency (UNIDO) is now launching a project aimed to assist the development of the textile and footwear industries in Armenia. The total package sound reach 2 million US dollars.

The first initiative should result in the opening of a center of services for the industry, offering training and education, as well as other supporting services for the local industry, such as financial management and exporting related services. UNIDO says it is necessary to train the local workers engaged in textile and footwear production so that they are more familiar with the international standards. The center should be inaugurated in September.

The new program is aimed at improving the competitiveness of the export-oriented industries in Armenia, and for that UNIDO is working closely with the Ministry of Economic Development and Investments. The Government of Armenia considers this industries to have great potential for rapid development so its revival has been set as a priority and is seen as a means to create jobs, boost value-added trade and expand exports, while  comparative and historical advantages both in the region and internationally are deepened.
