Torben Schütz (HDS/L): the Barefoot European Shoe Fair is the beginning of a success story
We spoke to Torben Schütz, Deputy Managing Director at the Federal Association of German Footwear and Leather Goods Industry, to learn more about the upcoming Barefoot European Shoe Fair, the first of its kind in Europe. The preview takes place in the summer in Offenbach, close to Frankfurt
As the demand for barefoot shoes grows worldwide, the Barefoot European Shoe Fair marks a significant milestone as the first trade event solely dedicated to this footwear in Europe. We interviewed Torben Schütz, Deputy Managing Director at the HDS/L, to know more about the new trade fair, which will occur between the 31st of July and the 3rd of August in Offenbach, near Frankfurt, Germany.

Trade Fair

The decision to launch the fair was driven by the growing popularity of barefoot shoes, particularly in Germany. “Not just recently, but we have been observing this trend for several seasons now. While this type of shoe was initially only of interest to a specific target group, demand has now spread to other groups of buyers. Interest in barefoot shoes is increasing dramatically across all genders and ages”, notes Schütz.

This rising demand has encouraged established and emerging brands to introduce barefoot models into their collections, while several retailers have begun specialising in the segment. The event responds to this momentum by providing a dedicated platform to highlight the unique value and appeal of barefoot footwear.

Benefits

Barefoot shoes are widely promoted for their benefits to foot health and natural movement. Characterised by their thin, flexible soles and spacious toe boxes, they are said to promote a more natural gait and strengthen foot muscles.

Proponents believe that wearing barefoot shoes can improve balance, coordination and underfoot sensitivity. The design also fosters a sense of freedom for the foot while maintaining protection from ground surfaces.

Attending

The fair is not limited to traditional B2B (business-to-business) interactions. It also incorporates a B2C (business-to-consumer) dimension, ensuring that the consumer voice is part of the conversation

Attendees, including retailers, manufacturers and customers, can expect to see new collections from national and international exhibitors. In addition, the event will offer a comprehensive programme featuring “lectures, discussion panels and networking moments”, highlights the Deputy Managing Director.

“The exact program has not yet been determined. However, the trade fair will publish all news on exhibitors and the supporting program as soon as possible”.

Vision

Looking ahead, the organisers see this inaugural edition as just the “beginning of a success story”, shares Schütz. They hope to establish the Barefoot European Shoe Fair as a recurring event that will grow in scope and influence, further cementing the barefoot shoe category as an essential segment of the broader footwear industry.
