Pakistan: footwear exports decline despite leather footwear growth

Pakistani footwear exports declined slightly in value in the first two months of the 2026-2027 fiscal year, as a sharp contraction in the other footwear segment offset growth in leather and canvas footwear

According to data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), Pakistan exported 3.14 million pairs of footwear worth 33.21 million US dollars between July and August 2026. Compared to the same two months of the previous fiscal year, this represents a 10.54% decrease in volume and a 1.17% decrease in value.

Leather footwear remains the country’s leading export category by value and recorded a more positive performance. In the first two months of the fiscal year, the country exported 1.68 million pairs of leather shoes, an increase of 7.97% year-on-year. In value, exports reached 27.61 million US dollars, reflecting a 1.24% increase year-on-year.

The canvas footwear segment also recorded growth, albeit from a much smaller starting point. Pakistan exported around 32 thousand pairs of shoes, worth approximately 680 thousand US dollars, during July and August. This represents year-on-year rises of 66.50% in volume and 58.11% in value.

However, the performance of the sector was negatively impacted by Other footwear exports. Compared to the first two months of the 2025-2026 fiscal year, shipments in this category fell by 26.16% in volume to 1.43 million pairs and by 16.66% in value to 4.92 million US dollars between July and August.

Leather Sector

In the first two months of the current year, leather manufacturers generated 118.37 million US dollars in export value, which is 13.45% higher than the 104.34 million US dollars generated in the same period last year.

Exports of tanned leather also increased during this period, reaching 23.98 million US dollars, which is 10.33% higher than the 21.74 million US dollars recorded in the same period the previous year.

Pakistan’s Footwear Industry

According to the World Footwear 2026 Yearbook (more information available here), the Pakistani footwear industry is the seventh largest in the world. Mostly concentrated in the Punjab province, this industry is predominantly geared towards the country's internal market.
