Eva Haak from AMI: Polymers in Footwear 2025 spotlights innovation and networking
We spoke to Eva Haak, Conference Production Manager at AMI’s Polymers in Footwear Conference. We learned more about this year’s event, which will happen in Portland on July 16th and 17th
The AMI’s Polymers in Footwear 2025 conference aims to provide a vital platform for footwear manufacturers, brands, suppliers, and innovators to address some of the most pressing challenges facing the industry today. Eva Haak, Conference Production Manager, shared many insights about the upcoming event in mid-July, in Portland, Oregon.

Event

Participants will gain valuable insights into the latest advancements in polymer science and technology. The conference programme includes discussions on new materials that improve durability, performance and sustainability, critical attributes for future footwear collections. “The purpose of the conference is to provide actionable solutions to key issues and to move the industry forward collaboratively”, Haak shares.

Beyond its technical agenda, the conference emphasises the importance of relationship building. “We dedicate significant time to networking opportunities, providing delegates an opportunity to grow their network and connect with industry leaders who are driving innovation and working together to overcome obstacles towards a circular future for the footwear industry”, she highlights.

Themes

Haak acknowledges that “our unique focus is on materials for footwear applications, and the overarching theme of the event is sustainability and circularity in the footwear industry”. Organisers have designed a diverse programme that includes market insights, material advancements and future-oriented manufacturing technologies. Attendees can expect explorations into bio-based, biodegradable, and recyclable materials, as well as the latest trends in product innovation and design.

Notable highlights include Skechers discussing how scientific instruments are advancing design-thinking approaches and driving innovation. Decathlon will share insights on supercritical fluid injection foaming technology, while Tien Kang, a Taiwanese machinery specialist, will explore physical foam injection as a sustainable manufacturing method.

Framas, a German company known for high-performance plastic components, will delve into artificial intelligence applications in footwear production. Meanwhile, the Footwear Distributors & Retailers of America (FDRA) will lead discussions on the impacts of tariffs and future policy trends.

A major new feature this year is the addition of roundtable discussions and a live audience polling panel moderated by AMI. Representatives from Skechers, Arc'teryx, the Portland Fashion Institute and The Footwear Collective will join to debate current trends and share forecasts.

The event also promises presentations from Vibram Corporation, Trexel, INSITE Performance, Algenesis Labs, Primient Covation, and Qore. With sponsors including INSITE, Trexel, Qira, Susterra, and Tien Kang, the conference benefits from strong support across the value chain, underlining its relevance to diverse industry segments. Haak shares her enthusiasm: “We are very excited about this year’s speaker line-up and are already looking forward to insightful discussions and making new connections during the networking!

2024 Edition

Reflecting on the 2024 edition, organisers highlighted impactful sessions by Under Armour on performance-driven sustainability and PUMA’s work with 3D-printed outsoles. Discussions on recycling end-of-life footwear, led by the University of Bologna - RE-SPORT, further demonstrated a growing commitment to circular practices across the industry.

Feedback from last year’s event showed the demand for more collaborative and interactive sessions”, the Conference Production Manager shares. In response, this year’s agenda includes speed networking and expanded roundtable discussions to facilitate stronger connections and a deeper exchange of ideas among attendees.

Impact

Ultimately, Polymers in Footwear 2025 seeks to inspire a shift from competition to collective problem-solving. “Attendees will learn strategies to tackle current industry challenges, gain a comprehensive understanding of advanced polymer technologies, sustainable practices, and industry trends while enhancing their expertise and professional development”, Haak highlights.

Since networking is a cornerstone of our events, we are creating space for attendees to forge meaningful, long-lasting relationships with industry leaders, experts and peers, opening the door for collaboration, mentorship and business opportunities”, she points out. By combining advanced technical content with opportunities for practical learning and community building, the event is designed to drive meaningful, lasting change within the footwear industry and empower participants to apply new ideas and approaches in their work.
