Portuguese footwear exports reach new record
According to the Portuguese Footwear Association, APICCAPS, exports of footwear will register in 2014 a new record as the industry’ sales abroad will cross the 1 850 million euros threshold
From January to October, the Portuguese footwear industry exported over 70 million pairs of shoes, valued at 1 655 million euros. Compared to the previous year’s performance there has been an increase of 8.8%. This is the fifth consecutive year of growth for the Portuguese footwear industry in foreign markets (the destination of 95% of its production). This excellent performance in the current year is the continuation of a consolidated growth registered in the last few years: since 2010 footwear exports have increased more than 45%.

Portuguese footwear exports, reaching 150 countries across the five continents, are growing in most destination markets. In the European Union Portuguese footwear has consolidated its position, with a global growth of 8%; however, it is outside the EU that Portuguese footwear is gaining more ground. Markets such as the US (+ 65%), Canada (+29%), Australia (+26.8%) and China (+46.6%) must be highlighted for their excellent growth rhythm.

Bearing this in mind, the Portuguese Footwear, Components and Leather Goods Manufacturers’ Association (APICCAPS) is forecasting a new record for footwear exports in 2014. According to the Portuguese association, footwear will reach a new records, crossing the 1 850 million euros barrier for the first time.

According to the same source, another important aspect relates to the creation of jobs, resulting from investments currently under way in places like Cabeceiras de Basto, Celorico de Basto, Paredes de Coura or Pinhel. The sector should end the year with more than 35 000 employees in roughly 1350 industrial companies.
